Summary

Paris, 1310, the Marais district. In the great royal beguinage, hundreds of women live, study and work as they please. Refusing both marriage and the cloister, the beguines form an uncategorizable community, half religious, half secular. Old Ysabel, keeper of the secrets of plants and souls, watches over them, until the arrival of a young stranger disturbs their peace. Silent and rebellious, Maheut the Redhead is fleeing a forced marriage and a sinister Franciscan. As the specter of heresy haunts the kingdom, the Templars are persecuted and one of their own is burned at the stake, the beguines of Paris must fight for Maheut, and for their own independence and freedom. A vivid plunge into a little-known Middle Ages, with heroines subversive and feminist before their time.
